I tried using the new DVD drive to boot Linux, but the laptop skips right over the CD/DVD drive and instead tries to boot from the HDD only. I then tried to install ubuntu via usb flash drive and it would not detect the HDD. You could also be right about the device drivers as thats how it looks. For anti-virus I would recommend AVG free edition. The laptop was also booting from the drive when I got it, but it isn't now for some reason. I think something is just wrong with mobo or machine.
