If you are going to use your own connector instance you can safely omit all the -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.* properties. The JMX 1.4 Specification combines the original JMX specification with the Remote JMX specification in a single document (the JMX Remote API Specification is part III of this document). I have (hopefully) clarified this in the JMX docs.

I'm not clear on why this should be needed, but passing 'localhost' definitely will not work.
