never mind, I figured it out, that firewall on the server caused the problem. Specifically, going to step 6 under outlook 2003, it mentions that the error message is expected when clicking Check Name. This means that Outlook clients no longer connect directly to an Exchange 2010 Mailbox server. Once I checked the box, I could connect to my 2010 mailbox.

Encryption between Outlook and Exchange is enabled by default, which explains why these clients can connect to Exchange 2010 without any issues.
