It was already bound to the domain through ppen directory/active directory before the Yosemite upgrade. It was our Terminal Server that had the issue (aprox 50 users) so it would have been a hell if I had not found this before the next work day. The error message is always that the authenticating server cannot be found. Is there a name for the (anti- ) pattern of passing parameters that will only be used several levels deep in the call chain?

If this is your only DC, you need to make sure that it is using itself for DNS and not anything else. Remember your domain name in the text box. If you don't have another DC, you should get one, even as a VM. I then changed the preferred dns server on my Windows 7 box to 192.168.2.9 and tried to join the domain, however it can't find it.
