It's just this one computer - I had managed to connect to the internet on this computer using a wireless mobile broadband dongle that my wife had, and did this as http://electrictricycle.net/dns-server/cannot-communicate-with-the-primary-dns-server-vista.html The only thing that could be automatic but itsn't here is 'automatic metric' which is in the advanced TCP/IP settings.
this will reset your ip connection. Perhaps this is just some incorrect setting that causes blockage? Save the config and exit.
