The bad database was still in read only mode, even though its data files were completely gone.

This would mean the database engine having to copy with two (or more) versions of the physical structures – which is very complicated from an engineering perspective. UPDATE: I realized that when I select a database to attach, three entries appear under "database details". Database 'paulsdb' cannot be upgraded because it is read-only, has read-only files or the user does not have permissions to modify some of the files. How did early mathematicians make it without Set theory? Make sure Database or files are writeable.
