A System Properties window will open, select the Hardware tab click the button for Device Manager. If the network cable is not plugged in then it would display Network cable unplugged. Sounds like its just taking extra long to get allocated an IP address and get the network connection sorted out. He should look for and use his service tag from the back/bottom of the computer.

You need to go to your computer manufacturers web site - support and drivers ( on another computer, of course, and find the drivers for your model. If you are able to find the driver file and download it to the computer, I find it works best if you right-click on the network card and choose to uninstall You'll need to tell more about the XP disk as to whether it's a standard OEM copy, retail copy or a manufacturer's disk that came with the PC. Should I be looking for something specific in the description?
